About
David L. Barnes is a Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF), where he also serves as the Interim Director of the Institute of Northern Engineering and Associate Dean for Research in the College of Engineering and Mines. His research focuses on Arctic environmental challenges, particularly groundwater dynamics in permafrost, contaminant transport, and solutions for air/water quality in cold regions. He holds a Ph.D. in Chemical and Bioresource Engineering from Colorado State University and is a registered Professional Civil Engineer.
Dr. Barnes' research interests center on the unique hydrogeology of permafrost-affected systems, including:
- Thermokarst aquifer behavior and talik formation
- Fate of hydrocarbons and heavy metals in freezing soils
- Dust control technologies for Arctic transportation infrastructure
- Vapor intrusion mechanisms in cold climates
- Remediation strategies for contaminated sites in remote communities
His recent publications demonstrate a strong emphasis on practical solutions for Arctic environmental management, with recurring themes in permafrost hydrology, contaminant mitigation, and community-focused infrastructure. Articles frequently address field validation of engineering designs under extreme conditions, with methodologies ranging from geophysical surveys to controlled laboratory simulations of freeze-thaw cycles.
Dr. Barnes leads interdisciplinary teams addressing complex cold-region challenges, including projects on wildfire smoke impacts, COVID-19 sanitation vulnerabilities in remote Alaska, and sustainable dust control. His work frequently involves collaboration with tribal communities, regulatory agencies, and international research consortia.
