David Johnson

David Johnson is an Assistant Professor of Photography at Coastal Carolina University's School of Humanities, Department of Visual Arts. His work explores the interplay between society, architecture, and individual experiences through long-term documentary projects.

Johnson's research focuses on how human-made environments shape personality and how individuals interact with transient spaces, using diverse image-making strategies. His books Wig Heavier Than a Boot (2019) and It Can Be This Way Always (2021) demonstrate visual inquiry into spatial dynamics across campgrounds, museums, and music festivals.

He has secured creative grants from the Regional Arts Commission and Gateway Foundation's Great Rivers Visual Arts Award, with exhibitions at institutions like the National Building Museum and Blue Star Contemporary. Johnson has curated projects at the Center of Creative Arts and International Photography Hall of Fame, while maintaining artist residencies in Stuttgart and Paris.
