David J. Rothenberg

David J. Rothenberg is Professor of Music at Case Western Reserve University, specializing in Medieval and Renaissance musicology. He has been a faculty member since 2005 and served as Chair of the Department of Music since 2015.

• Ph.D. in Music History from Yale University (2004)

His research explores intersections between music, liturgy, visual art, and literature in pre-modern Europe. Key publications include books on Marian devotion in medieval music and interdisciplinary studies of cultural symbolism.

Rothenberg's scholarly work focuses on: Anthology compilation, liturgical-musical synthesis, manuscript source analysis, devotional practices, and cultural symbolism. His recent publications emphasize historical periodization and interdisciplinary methodologies.
