David Hounshell is the David M. Roderick Professor of Technology and Social Change (Emeritus) at Carnegie Mellon University's Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences, Department of Social and Decision Sciences. His research focuses on the history of technological innovation, industrial R&D management, and Cold War-era scientific institutions.
Education: Ph.D. from the University of Delaware.
Research interests include the historical development of manufacturing technology, the role of R&D in science-based industries, and the impact of Cold War institutions like the RAND Corporation on modern analytical methods. He has authored seminal works on mass production history (1985), Du Pont's R&D strategies (1988), and Cold War science policy (1997-2000).
His publications analyze themes such as post-WWII automation in automotive industries, the evolution of corporate R&D systems, and the interplay between military-industrial research and civilian technological progress. Current projects include a sequel to his 1984 manufacturing study and an in-depth analysis of RAND Corporation's Cold War-era contributions.
Collaborations with SDS faculty include work on the economics of innovation and historical analysis of firm-level technological strategies.
