David Harding is a Professor of Viola and Chamber Music at Carnegie Mellon University's School of Music. He has an internationally renowned career as a performer, with notable engagements at venues such as Berlin’s Philharmonie, Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, and New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art. His collaborations include work with ensembles like the Pacifica Quartet and Trio Verlaine, and recordings such as Six Departures and works by Philip Glass. Previously, he held positions as Associate Professor at the University of British Columbia and with the Chester String Quartet as Ensemble in Residence at Indiana University South Bend.
Education: Graduated from The Juilliard School of Music, mentored by Tibor Vaghy, Paul Doktor, and Emmanuel Vardi. His performances and recordings have been broadcast globally on CBC Radio, BBC Radio 3, NPR, and ABC Australia.
Research interests focus on expanding the viola repertoire through commissions, interdisciplinary projects with poets and rock musicians, and early music exploration with Tafelmusik. Awards include the Sir John Barbirolli Award and recognition for his Juno-winning album Mad Mad World.
Labs/Teams: Active member of Trio Verlaine (viola, flute, harp), former member of the Toronto String Quartet and Chester String Quartet. Teaching includes masterclasses at institutions like the Banff Centre and Royal Conservatory of Music.
