About
Dr. David Duriesmith is Senior Lecturer in Gender and Politics at the University of Sheffield's School of Sociological Studies, Politics and International Relations. He holds a BA and PhD from the University of Melbourne, with postdoctoral experience at Melbourne and Queensland universities. His pro-feminist research examines patriarchy, masculinities, and violence in conflict contexts.
Research spans three areas: 1) Masculinities in peacebuilding (fieldwork in Fiji/Aceh); 2) Gender in foreign fighter networks (Indonesia/Philippines); 3) Transformation of warfare through gendered structures. His work integrates feminist IR theory with critical masculinity studies.
Publications analyze militarized masculinities in DDR programs, jihadi disengagement, and gender bias in academia. Fieldwork includes collaborations with UN Women and UNDP on violent extremism.
Teaching focuses on gender politics, oppression, and decolonial IR approaches. Modules include Gender and the World (POL122) and Feminist IR (POL6611).
Supervision expertise covers violence prevention, conflict transformation, and gendered security dynamics.
