David Cumberland

David Cumberland is the Dean of the Chester School of Education at the University of Chester (since 2017) and holds the academic rank of Associate Professor. With over 20 years in education, he has extensive experience in teaching, advisory roles in local authorities, and university administration. He previously worked at Liverpool Hope University before joining the University of Chester in 2012.

Leadership Experience: David has managed major transitions, including chairing the Transition Steering Group during the closure of two schools and the £33m construction of a new school in Newton le Willows, where he became the inaugural Chair of Governors. He also oversaw a large MAT’s transition to devolve schools to other MATs as CEO.

Additional Contributions: His career includes roles such as Vice Chair of the Liverpool South Community Health Council during the Alder Hey organ retention scandal, demonstrating his engagement with ethical governance in public institutions.
