David Brown is a Senior Lecturer in American Studies at the University of Manchester, specializing in slavery, race relations, and the US Civil War with a focus on transnational contexts. He holds a Ph.D. from Hull University and previously taught at Sheffield University.
His research examines non-slaveholding Southern whites, British public opinion during the Civil War, and mythmaking in Anglo-American diplomacy. He authored Race in the American South and a biography of Hinton Rowan Helper. Brown currently studies the Manchester Union and Emancipation Society's role in British abolitionist responses to the Civil War.
