About
David Binks is a Professor in the Photon Physics Group at The University of Manchester, part of the Photon Science Institute (PSI). He leads the 'Photonics Materials and Devices' theme within PSI, aligned with the Henry Royce Institute's 'Atoms to Devices' strand. His work focuses on quantum-structured semiconductors, including quantum dots, GaN quantum wells, and 2D materials. He has published over 100 journal articles and contributed to books on photorefractive polymers and laser technology.
Education: PhD in Physics (1998, University of Manchester), BSc (Hons) in Physics (1992, University of Manchester).
- Collaborations: Advanced Photonics Research Institute (South Korea), University of Cambridge, Nanoco Technologies, University of Salford, and University of Leeds.
- Research Interests: Photophysics of nanostructures, solar cells, LEDs, and quantum materials. His work aligns with UN SDGs related to sustainable energy and innovation.
- Supervision: 18 PhD and 11 MSc students completed, currently supervising 2 PhD students on nanoparticle photophysics and 2D materials.
His research explores light-matter interactions for device applications, combining physics with chemistry/materials science. Recent projects include cubic GaN quantum wells for high-brightness LEDs and spin-photon interfaces in quantum dots.
Labs/Teams: Leads the Photon Physics Group and contributes to the Henry Royce Institute's materials innovation initiatives.
