About
Darin W. Nutter is a Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Arkansas, College of Engineering. He joined the university in 1994, progressing from Assistant to Associate Professor before achieving full Professorship in 2012. He served as Department Head from 2017-2024 and previously directed the Arkansas Industrial Energy Clearinghouse (2010-2016). A licensed Professional Engineer and ASHRAE Fellow, he has received multiple teaching and research awards throughout his career.
Education:
- Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Texas A&M University (1994)
- M.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Oklahoma State University (1988)
- B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Oklahoma State University (1986)
Professor Nutter's research centers on thermodynamics and heat transfer phenomena, with specialization in liquid-vapor phase change processes. His applied work targets energy efficiency through HVAC&R system optimization, sustainable building design, and life-cycle assessment methodologies. He bridges fundamental thermal science with practical applications in industrial facilities, commercial buildings, and residential energy systems.
His publication record reveals dual expertise in thermal engineering and educational scholarship. The award-winning 2013 ASHRAE paper demonstrated nanotechnology applications for heat transfer enhancement in air-conditioning systems, while his 2005 educational research analyzed mechanical engineering student retention patterns.
Scientific Awards:
- Distinguished Service Award, ASHRAE (2015)
- ASHRAE Fellow (2011)
- ASEE Midwest Section Outstanding Teaching Award (2014)
- Multiple University of Arkansas Outstanding Teacher awards (1996-2014)
- University of Arkansas Outstanding Researcher (2008-2009)
- Induction into Arkansas Academy of Mechanical Engineers (2014)
As Director of the Arkansas Industrial Energy Clearinghouse, Professor Nutter secured federal funding through the Department of Energy's Industrial Assessment Center program, training students to conduct energy audits that generated significant cost savings for regional manufacturers. His leadership in this federally funded initiative demonstrates sustained success in grant acquisition and workforce development.
He maintains active collaborations with ASHRAE and industry partners through the Industrial Assessment Center network, focusing on real-world implementation of energy conservation measures in building systems and industrial processes.
