About
Danuta Fjellestad is a Professor of American Literature and Culture at Uppsala University's Department of English, holding this Chair Professorship since 2007. Previously, she served as Full Professor of American and Postcolonial Studies at Blekinge Institute of Technology (1998-2007) and Associate Professor at Göteborg University (1995-1998). She maintains active international affiliations as faculty member of Dartmouth College's Futures of American Studies Institute and has held visiting positions at Columbia University, University of Chicago, and others.
Her research spans 20th-21st century American fiction, visual culture, and literary theory, with particular focus on postmodern/post-postmodern texts, word-image interactions, ethnic studies, and new media. Current book project The Pictorial Turn in Literature: Reading Fiction Today examines contemporary American literature's engagement with visual elements. Her scholarly approach integrates theoretical rigor with pedagogical innovation in higher education.
Analysis of her 15 most recent publications reveals consistent exploration of intermediality (especially photography-literature relationships), evolving postmodern paradigms, and narrative innovation in digital contexts. Key trends include the 'pictorial turn' in contemporary fiction, post-postmodern cultural configurations, and transnational American studies frameworks.
Fjellestad has secured significant research funding including Fulbright (2000-2001), Swedish Research Council (1995-1997), Bank of Sweden Tercentenary Foundation, and ACLS grants. She serves on the Swedish Research Council Board since 2010 and acts as expert for multiple national research agencies. Current editorial roles include Studia Neophilologica, Journal of Aesthetics and Culture, and Acta Universitatis Upsaliensis.
Her academic leadership extends to conference organization and scholarly networks, with recent presentations addressing tactile multimodality in novels, graphic elements in narrative, and the 'next big thing' in literary studies. Professional activities demonstrate sustained engagement with both theoretical innovation and practical applications in humanities education.
