Prof. Daniela Stockmann is Director of the Centre for Digital Governance and Professor of Digital Governance at the Hertie School. She specializes in studying interactions between governments, tech platforms, and citizens in digital governance contexts, focusing on China and Europe. Her work challenges top-down governance paradigms, emphasizing bottom-up influences from platform firms.
Education: PhD in Political Science (University of Michigan, 2007), MA from School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London, and BA from University of Rochester. Previously served as Associate Professor at Leiden University.
Research Interests: Digital governance, social media regulation, authoritarianism in the digital age, and platform politics in China. Current projects include the ERC-funded China Internet Survey exploring citizen-influenced corporatism.
Awards: 2015 Goldsmith Book Prize for Media Commercialization and Authoritarian Rule in China.
Advisory Work: Advised policymakers in Netherlands, Germany, and US on Chinese foreign policy and European digital governance.
