Daniela Paredes Grijalva is a Research Fellow and PhD scholar (ÖAW-DOC Fellowship) at the University of Vienna’s Department of Geography and Regional Research, part of the Faculty of Earth Sciences, Geography and Astronomy. She holds a BA from Universidad San Francisco de Quito (Ecuador) and an MA in Cultural and Social Anthropology from the University of Vienna. Her work focuses on the intersections of environmental change, mobilities, and decolonial epistemologies, with a regional emphasis on Indonesia, Southeast Asia, and Latin America/Abya Yala.
Her current research investigates socio-environmental frictions in hazard-prone areas of Indonesia using qualitative methods including digital and in-person ethnography. She is an associate member of the Research Platform Mobile Cultures and Societies and part of the Global De-Centre. Her interdisciplinary work bridges academia with practice, emphasizing anti-racist and decolonial methodologies.
Key research themes include climate migration, gendered experiences of displacement, and the coloniality of knowledge systems. Over 28 publications span journals like Hypatia, Gender, and Sojourn, addressing topics from decolonial academia reforms to transnational social protection strategies. Her work highlights marginalized voices in disaster narratives and advocates for inclusive climate policies.
