Jorge Gomez-Paredes

Jorge Gomez-Paredes is a Researcher and Team Leader of Energy Transition Research currently affiliated with Duke University as an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Earth and Climate Sciences Division of the Nicholas School of the Environment. He also serves as Manager of the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network for the Andean Region, a member of the Center for International Development and Environmental Research (ZEU) at Justus Liebig University Giessen, and an expert member of the Global Solutions Initiative – The World Policy Forum.

  • Ph.D. in Energy Science from the Department of Socio-Environmental Sciences, School of Energy Science, Kyoto University

His research integrates ecological economics, political ecology, and industrial ecology, leveraging mathematical models and systems thinking to analyze Socio-Economic Metabolism (energy and material flows in socio-economic systems) and social-ecological systems. Key applications include assessing socio-environmental impacts of economic activities, evaluating sustainability solutions, and analyzing global value chains, footprint calculations, nexus analyses, and international spillover effects.

As an academic, he has taught sustainability topics at Yachay Tech University (Ecuador) (undergraduate) and Justus Liebig University Giessen (Germany) (master's). He has mentored master's students from Florida International University (USA) and the University of Sydney (Australia), and actively collaborates as principal investigator, Co-PI, project manager, and researcher in international projects.
