Daniel Shanken is a UmArts WASP-HS Art and AI Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Umeå School of Architecture, Umeå University. His work bridges art, technology, and cognition, examining the societal and environmental impacts of AI systems, algorithms, and machine learning through installations, video, sculpture, and sound.
Education:
- BFA in Fine Art Media, Art Center College of Design (2006)
- MFA in Art Practice, Goldsmiths, University of London (2012)
- PhD in contemporary art practice (2023), culminating in a solo exhibition at the Stanley Picker Gallery, London
Research Focus: Investigates generative AI, recommendation algorithms, and search engines' influence on perception, practice, and culture. Current project: UmArts Art & AI research (2023–2028).
Exhibitions: Featured internationally at institutions like ICA London, Art Basel Hong Kong, Whitechapel Gallery, CCA Glasgow, and Kiasma Helsinki. Maintains an active artistic practice through solo and group shows.
