About
Professor Daniel Roehr is an Associate Professor at the University of British Columbia's School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture (SALA), with dual licensure as a landscape architect in British Columbia and Berlin. He leads the greenskinslab, focusing on climate resilience tools and open-access design solutions. His research bridges multisensory landscape design, living roofs, and low-impact development (LID), with notable works like the award-winning Daimler-Chrysler Green Roof Project (Berlin, 1995–2000) and the Venice Architecture Biennale-exhibited LID application. Roehr holds a Higher National Diploma in Horticulture from Askham Bryan College and a BA in Landscape Architecture from Heriot-Watt University/Edinburgh College of Art.
His research emphasizes accessible climate adaptation tools and multisensory design pedagogy, as seen in his 2022 book *Multisensory Landscape Design: A Designer’s Guide for Seeing*. He advocates for hand-drawing as a design tool through his "Off Screen Studio" blog and Instagram. Roehr’s awards include the 2016 Killam Teaching Prize and a 2013 UBC Sustainability Fellowship. His lab’s stormwater calculation tool and landslide mitigation software reflect his commitment to practical, community-focused environmental solutions.
Professional experience spans Europe, North America, and Asia, including co-founding a firm in Shanghai (2004). Key research areas include urban water systems, green infrastructure policy, and regenerative design methodologies. Recent publications explore participatory urban design frameworks and sensorial education techniques in landscape architecture.
