Dr. Daniel Klingensmith is a Professor of History at Maryville College, where he has served since 1998. He previously held the role of Vice President and Dean of the College from 2019 to 2024 before returning to the faculty. His expertise spans modern world history, focusing on 20th-century Europe and South Asia, including the impacts of world wars, colonialism, and post-colonial development.
Educated at Harvard University (B.A., History) and the University of Chicago (M.A./Ph.D., History), Klingensmith has received notable accolades, including the Maryville College Outstanding Teacher Award (2004, 2011) and fellowships such as the ACA-Mellon and Fulbright Senior Research roles. His research explores themes like nationalism, development, and environmental policy, notably documented in his 2007 book analyzing dam projects in India and the U.S.
He has held leadership roles, including chair of the Humanities Division, Strategic Planning Task Force, and Core Curriculum Task Force. His recent work examines interwar economic and social dynamics in the U.S., British Empire, and Europe.
