About
Daniel Hole is a Professor and Head of the Department at the Institute of Linguistics, University of Stuttgart. He currently serves as Dean of Faculty 9 (since 2021) and previously held the position of Dean of Study Affairs (2018–2021). His administrative roles include Chair of the Examination Board for German Majors (2015–2020), Secretary of the German Linguistic Society (2016–2018), and Spokesperson for the Stuttgart Research Focus 'Language and Cognition' (2016–2018).
His research specializes in theoretical linguistics, with emphasis on syntax, semantics, and crosslinguistic typology. Key areas include focus particles, binding theory, locative alternations, and the syntax-semantics interface in languages such as German, Chinese, Vietnamese, and sign languages. His work integrates formal analysis with corpus-based and computational approaches to linguistic variation.
Hole's recent publications demonstrate a consistent focus on syntactic theory and semantic interfaces. Trends include crosslinguistic comparisons (German/Chinese/Vietnamese), sign language syntax, computational analysis of semantic change, and the morphosyntax of focus particles. His articles frequently engage with binding theory, cartographic syntax, and diachronic linguistics.
He has led significant research projects including:
- Scalarity at the syntax-semantics interface (SYSSI)
- SFB 732 Project B6: 'Underspecification in voice systems and the syntax-morphology interface' (DFG-funded, 2016–2018)
- SFB 732 Project B8: 'Alternations and binding' (DFG-funded, 2014–2018)
- DAAD College Partnership Program: German Studies collaboration between Stuttgart and Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso (2016–2022)
As Deputy Spokesperson for SFB 732 'Incremental Specification in Context' (2014–2018), he coordinated interdisciplinary linguistics research. He maintains editorial roles for Journal of East Asian Linguistics, Linguistics, and Studies in Language.
