About
Daniel Haun is a Professor of Liberal Arts at Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), serving since Fall 2023. Previously, he held academic roles at Samford University (2019–2023), the University of South Carolina (2016–2023), and the University of Pennsylvania (2013–2015). He also served as a photographer and photojournalist in the U.S. Army from 2006–2012, documenting military operations in Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom.
Education includes a Ph.D. in Mass Communication from the University of South Carolina, an M.F.A. in Fine Art from the University of Pennsylvania, and a B.F.A. in Art Studio from the University of Kentucky.
His research interests span visual communication, advertising, and film studies, with publications in esteemed academic journals. Notable awards include the AEJMC Top Faculty Paper (2022), the Donald G. Hileman Teacher of the Year Award (2021), and the Graduate Student Excellence in Teaching Award (2019). He has mentored students on research projects and presentations at national conferences.
Haun has held leadership roles in the American Advertising Federation (AAF), including AAF District 7 Director of College Chapters and President of the Birmingham chapter. He created the Mighty Mentors Podcast to support career development for advertising students and organized portfolio reviews to connect students with industry professionals.
Prior to academia, he served as a graphic designer and taught courses in video editing, film sound, and cinema studies. His military service included capturing critical moments of military operations, reflecting his expertise in visual storytelling.
