He is affiliated with the Department of Water, Environment, Civil Engineering, and Safety (WUBS), teaching across multiple programs including Civil Engineering, Water Management, Recycling and Waste Management, and Water Engineering.
His academic journey began at RWTH Aachen University, where he studied, earned his doctorate, and taught from 1998 to 2014. Following this, he worked as a Consulting and Research Engineer at Deltares in the Netherlands before returning to academia. He also serves as a Guest Lecturer at Münster University of Applied Sciences since 2016.
- RWTH Aachen University: Graduate Engineer (1998-2003), PhD (2005-2012)
- École Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées, Paris: Study period (2002-2003)
Prof. Bachmann's research interests focus on hydromechanics, hydrodynamic modeling, and flood risk management, with additional work in low water management. His research aims to develop methods and tools that improve flood protection and support adaptive and sustainable flood risk management. He leads the Flood Risk Management working group (AG FRM) which drives much of his research agenda.
Prof. Bachmann is active in several professional organizations including BWK (the environmental engineers) where he serves as Public Relations Officer, and DWA (German Association for Water, Wastewater and Waste) where he participates in multiple working groups related to flood resilience and low water management.
He is dedicated to student supervision, offering numerous opportunities for Bachelor's and Master's theses in his research areas. His teaching approach combines theoretical principles with engineering expertise to prepare students for interdisciplinary challenges in water management.
