About
Danai Avgeri is a Research Fellow and Teaching Associate in the Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology at the University of Vienna. She holds a PhD in Geography from Queen Mary, University of London, and previously conducted postdoctoral research at the University of Cambridge.
Her research focuses on borders, migration, humanitarianism, and racial capitalism, exploring how state power and capital shape displacement, mobility restrictions, and refugee governance. Notable themes include refugee rentierism, racialized extractivism, and the interplay between migration governance and global capitalist crises.
Her recent publications analyze refugee containment policies, health systems at Greek border hotspots, and the labor dynamics of aid-driven welfare systems. Her work bridges critical geography, political economy, and anthropology, critiquing systems of exclusion and exploitation.
Avgeri teaches courses via the University of Vienna’s u:find platform and maintains office hours by prior email arrangement. She co-edits a special issue on 'Frontiers of Value in Migration Governance' and actively engages in critical geographies of migration crises through scholar-activism.
