California Institute of Technology (Caltech)About
Dale I. Pullin is the Robert H. Goddard Professor of Aeronautics at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), affiliated with the Division of Engineering and Applied Science. He holds a B.Sc. from the University of Melbourne (1966), a B.E. from the University of Sydney (1968), and a Ph.D. from Imperial College, University of London (1974). His academic roles include Visiting Associate (1990), Professor (1991-2006), von Kármán Professor (2006-2017), and his current Goddard Professorship (2017–present).
Research focuses on computational and theoretical fluid mechanics, including vortex dynamics, compressible flow, shock dynamics, turbulence, and large-eddy simulation (LES). Key areas include LES for high-Reynolds-number wall-bounded flows, shock-driven flows in fluids and solids, and numerical methods for the Boltzmann equation. Publications span topics like turbulent boundary layers, Couette-Poiseuille flow, and shock dynamics.
He received recognition as a Fellow of the Australasian Fluid Mechanics Society. Teaching includes courses such as Ae/APh/CE/ME 101 (Fluid Mechanics) and Ae/ACM/ME 232 (Computational Fluid Dynamics), with a focus on advanced fluid mechanics and computational methods.
