Cynthia Hayes is a Teaching Faculty III in the Art & Design Department at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee (UWM), where she also serves as the Painting & Drawing Director and First Year Program Co-Coordinator. She collaborates with Hubei University of Technology in Wuhan, China, as part of the PSOA partnership, having taught design courses there and online during the pandemic.
Hayes holds a BFA in Painting and Drawing from UWM (1987) and an MFA in Painting from Michigan State University (1992).
Her research focuses on figurative art, influenced by historical traditions and non-Western art, particularly in India, Bhutan, and Thailand. She explores representations of childhood through works referencing 19th-century French sculptors and ancient Greek art. Her travels and studies, including Oxford University's program on Indian art and architecture, have inspired solo exhibitions in India.
