Crystal Johnson-Mann, M.D., MPH is an Assistant Professor of Minimally Invasive and Bariatric Surgery at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) College of Medicine. She graduated from MUSC College of Medicine in 2012 and completed her General Surgery Residency there in 2017 as part of the first all-female class. Following residency, she completed a minimally invasive surgery fellowship at the University of Virginia Health System.

As a passionate advocate for diversity in medicine, she founded 'A Lady & A Scholar,' which mentors African-American females interested in medical careers, and remains active in 'A Gentleman & A Scholar' organization. Her surgical expertise was honed under nationally recognized faculty in the GI surgery division at MUSC, with significant mentorship from Dr. David B. Adams (her mentor since medical school), Dr. Mark Lockett, Dr. Rana Pullatt, and Dr. Katherine Morgan.
Dr. Johnson-Mann draws on her background as a collegiate athlete (she played volleyball on scholarship at the University of South Carolina) to inform her approach to surgical training and mentorship. She emphasizes the importance of work-life balance, noting that 'having a family has allowed me to set boundaries to reduce burnout' after welcoming her two sons, Christian (age 4) and Kelsey (8 months old). As one of the women faculty in the Department of Surgery, she serves as a role model demonstrating how to excel in surgery while managing family responsibilities.
