Constance J. Newman

Constance J. Newman is an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Maternal and Child Health at the Gillings School of Global Public Health, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. With 32 years of global public health experience, she specializes in gender equity, reproductive health, and health workforce policy. Her career includes 30 years at IntraHealth International, leading gender equality initiatives and monitoring/evaluation programs across Africa, Latin America, Asia, and beyond.

Research Focus: Dr. Newman investigates systemic gender discrimination in healthcare systems, gender-based violence prevention, and integrating gender equity into HIV/AIDS programs. Her work emphasizes applying mixed-methods research to inform policy reforms and organizational change. Recent projects include a multicountry study on health worker gender discrimination, which influenced USAID’s 2023 technical brief on breaking barriers.

Teaching & Mentorship: She teaches global public health and maternal/child health at UNC, advising doctoral students and mentoring summer fellows. Her lectures cover gender discrimination analysis, reproductive health policy, and academic journal review.

Labs/Teams: Engaged with Gillings School initiatives on global health workforce development and gender transformative interventions in healthcare education. Collaborates with the North Carolina Institute for Public Health on community-driven health strategies.
