Collette Straughair

Collette Straughair is a Senior Lecturer in Adult Nursing at Northumbria University since 2005, holding a Nursing PhD (2017) focused on compassion in healthcare. She leads the adult nursing undergraduate program and provides personal tutoring. Her career spans NHS roles (1987–2005) including Staff Nurse, Midwife, and Practice Development Nurse. She holds academic qualifications including an MSc in Education (2006), BSc Midwifery (1999), and DipHE Nursing (1987), along with Senior Fellow (SFHEA) and Fellow (FHEA) status.

Research interests center on compassion in nursing, interprofessional collaboration, transnational education, and inclusion policies for academics with caregiving roles. Key contributions include developing a hydration care competency framework for elderly patients and analyzing interprofessional working dynamics. Professional activities include editorial work for Gerontology and Geriatric Medicine and presentations on academic inclusion initiatives.

Teaching spans all undergraduate nursing program levels, with student assessment responsibilities across levels 4–7. Current supervisory roles include guiding four postgraduate research students exploring topics like healthcare access for LGBTQ+ populations and interprofessional team dynamics.
