Claire M. Segijn is an Associate Professor at the Hubbard School of Journalism and Mass Communication, University of Minnesota–Twin Cities, where she holds the Mithun Program Fellowship in Advertising. Her research examines intended and unintended effects of digital media, specializing in media multitasking, synced advertising, privacy concerns, and ethical implications of personalized communication.
A 2021 bibliometric study identified Segijn as the leading contributor to media multitasking literature. Her pioneering work on synced advertising has established her as a foremost scholar in computational advertising research. She directs the Research in Strategic Communication (RiSC) Lab and employs diverse methodologies including eye-tracking, experiments, and meta-analyses.
Dr. Segijn's publications demonstrate consistent focus on advertising effectiveness in multiscreening environments, privacy calculus in personalized advertising, and ethical dimensions of data-driven marketing. Recent work investigates consumer perceptions of device eavesdropping and chilling effects of corporate surveillance across cultural contexts.
Her scholarly contributions have earned numerous honors including the Mary Alice Shaver Promising Professor Award (AAA), John E. Hunter Meta-Analysis Award (ICA), and Warwick Mid-Career Faculty Research Award. Research grants from AAA, AEJMC, and European Academy of Advertising support her innovative work at the advertising-technology-privacy nexus.
