About
Dr. Claire I R O'Mahony is an Associate Professor in History of Art and Design at the University of Oxford's Department for Continuing Education, where she serves as Course Director for the Master of Studies in the History of Design. She has held various leadership roles including Director of Graduate Studies and Admissions Tutor for Kellogg College.
Her educational background includes a double major in Art History and English Literature with French concentration from the University of California at Berkeley, and a doctorate from the Courtauld Institute of Art on townhall murals in Third Republic France. Prior to Oxford, she directed Lifelong Learning for History Art at the University of Bristol (2001-7) and worked as Education Officer at the Courtauld Gallery.
Dr. O'Mahony's research centers on how interiors, objects, and landscapes embody everyday history and placemaking, with particular interest in the sensoriality of design and craft. Her methodological approach emphasizes recognizing the autonomy of local cultures as 'colonies within' that function as borderlands and peripheries. Her specific regional interests include Occitan Languedoc, Borderland Lorraine, Aubusson in the Creuse, and the Gaelic Highlands of Scotland. Her work also incorporates influences from encounters with First Nations, Japanese, and African material cultures.
Her scholarly contributions span diverse areas including craft traditions, textile histories, exhibition installations, and furniture history. Her publications reveal a consistent focus on how marginalized places and peoples engage with both contemporary worlds and collective memory through traditions of making.
As an educator, Dr. O'Mahony founded Oxford's Master of Studies in History of Design in 2009 and has supervised over 160 successful MSt dissertations. She currently co-supervises doctoral projects on adaptive re-use of historic built environments and nineteenth-century building materials, and has served as External Examiner for doctoral candidates at Brighton, Cambridge, and Glasgow universities.
Dr. O'Mahony has held significant professional roles including Chair of the Design History Society and Associate Editor for the Journal of Design History (2019-2022), and curated exhibitions such as 'Brunel and the Art of Invention' for Bristol City Art Gallery during Brunel 200 in 2006. She has also led outreach initiatives including the Design History Society Virtual Seminar Series on topics like 'Representing Craft/Crafting Representation' and 'Hidden Histories Gender in Design.'
