About
Dr. Claire Bulgin is a Principal Research Fellow in Earth Observation at the Department of Meteorology, University of Reading. She specializes in satellite-derived Climate Data Records (CDRs) and their application to climate change impacts, including pest outbreaks and urban thermal comfort. Her work involves satellite image classification (land, sea, sea-ice, coasts), uncertainty characterization in surface temperature retrieval, and all-surface temperature analysis. She leads the CANARI project (Climate change in the Arctic-North Atlantic region and UK impacts) under the National Centre for Earth Observation (NCEO).
- Affiliations: University of Reading, Department of Meteorology
- Projects: ESA LST CCI, NCEO CANARI
Research focuses on land and sea surface temperature dynamics, cloud detection methodologies, and climate applications. She supervises PhD students Riccardo Monfardini (since 2023) and Agnieszka Walenkiewicz (graduated). Her work bridges satellite remote sensing with climate modeling, emphasizing uncertainty quantification and environmental monitoring.
Key contributions include Bayesian approaches for cloud detection in satellite data, dynamic sea-level analysis for UK storm surges, and validation practices for Earth observation datasets. Collaborations span institutions like ESA, NCEO, and international research groups.
