About
Dr Ciaran Arthur is an Irish Research Council Postdoctoral Fellow (2020–2022) at the University of Galway, affiliated with the Department of Classics within the School of Languages, Literatures & Cultures. His research focuses on early medieval English texts (c. 800–1150), challenging traditional dismissals of obscure language as nonsensical. His work situates these texts within broader medieval intellectual contexts, including hermeneutics, cosmology, and 'divine speech.'
Key areas of investigation include the intersection of obscure language with classical philosophies of language, cryptographic techniques, and biblical exegesis. Arthur’s project argues that such texts reflect intentional intellectual engagement with Christian cosmological frameworks and knowledge systems, rather than being mere scribal errors. Outputs will include a monograph analyzing case studies of these texts.
