Dr. Ciara Bracken-Roche is an Assistant Professor of Criminology in the Department of Law at Maynooth University and holds an adjunct position as Professor in the Department of Criminology at the University of Ottawa’s Faculty of Social Sciences. Her research focuses on the intersection of technology, governance, and security, particularly the adoption of drone technologies by policing and public safety agencies in Canada and Ireland. She explores how these technologies interact with legal, social, and technological norms, emphasizing surveillance, privacy, and civil liberties.
Dr. Bracken-Roche completed her PhD at Queen’s University under Dr. David Lyon, alongside an MA from the University of Warwick and a BSc from the University of Toronto. She teaches courses such as Introduction to Criminology and actively advises students in areas including security, surveillance, and technocratic governance.
Her research interests span surveillance studies, critical security studies, and the sociological implications of emerging technologies. She is affiliated with the Surveillance Studies Network, International Studies Association, and WIIS-Canada, and contributes to initiatives like the Inter/national FOI Research Council and the advisory board of The Study Up, a peer-reviewed publication focused on investigative research using freedom of information disclosures.
