Ciannat Howett is an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Gangarosa Department of Environmental Health at Emory University. She holds a B.A. from Emory University (1987) and a J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law (1992). Her career spans environmental law, policy, and sustainability, including roles as Director of Emory’s Sustainability Initiatives and leadership positions at the U.S. EPA and Southern Environmental Law Center. She is affiliated with multiple organizations, including the R. Howard Dobbs, Jr. Foundation, Emory Law School’s Turner Environmental Law Clinic, and the Sustainable Atlanta Board of Directors.
Her research focuses on maternal and child health, safe water advocacy, air pollution mitigation, and climate resilience. She has been recognized for her contributions with prestigious awards, including the U.S. EPA Gold Medal and the Pillar of Sustainability Award. Howett is a frequent speaker on environmental issues and has been named a “Georgia Super Lawyer” by Atlanta magazine.
She advises on sustainability initiatives and serves on boards addressing environmental justice, public health, and urban development. Her leadership emphasizes integrating environmental, social, and economic systems to ensure intergenerational equity.
