Dr. Lisa Thompson is an Associate Professor in the School of Nursing at Emory University and affiliated faculty in the Gangarosa Department of Environmental Health at the Rollins School of Public Health. She serves as Director of Graduate Studies for the PhD program in nursing and is a member of Emory's Network for Evaluation and Implementation Sciences (NEISE). She chairs the research working group of the Alliance of Nurses for Healthy Environments and sits on the American Academy of Nursing Expert Panel on Environmental and Public Health. Dr. Thompson is a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing and actively contributes to sustainability initiatives through her roles in the Emory Office of Sustainability and University Senate Committee on the Environment.
Education: BSN, MSN, FNP (San Francisco State University); MS and PhD in Environmental Health (University of California, Berkeley). Prior to joining Emory in 2017, she was faculty at the University of California, San Francisco School of Nursing.
Research focuses on environmental health impacts of household air pollution, implementation science for public health interventions, and sustainability. Her work spans maternal and child health outcomes, plastic waste reduction strategies, and global health equity. Recent studies include the multi-country HAPIN trial evaluating liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) stove interventions on birth outcomes and child development, and the Ecolectivos project addressing plastic waste burning in Guatemala.
Key awards include Fellow status in the American Academy of Nursing (2023). Professional service includes roles on institutional sustainability committees and national panels addressing environmental health policy.
Grants and collaborations involve NIH-funded research on cookstove interventions, climate change mitigation, and occupational heat exposure in farmworkers. She advises on global child health and environmental justice initiatives, integrating community engagement and participatory research methods.
