Chunsheng Wang is a Distinguished University Professor and holds the Robert Franklin and Frances Riggs Wright Distinguished Chair at the University of Maryland. He serves as the UMD Director of the Center for Research in Extreme Batteries (CREB) and is an Affiliate Fellow (REFI) at the Electrochemical Society. His primary affiliation is with the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, part of the A. James Clark School of Engineering, and he also contributes to the Materials Science and Engineering program and the Maryland Energy Innovation Institute.
Wang earned his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Zhejiang University, China, in 1995. His research focuses on advanced battery technologies, including rechargeable batteries, fuel cells, and electrochemical energy storage systems. He has pioneered breakthroughs such as water-in-salt electrolytes for Li-ion batteries and transition metal-free cathode chemistries. His work has led to over 340 peer-reviewed publications, an H-index of 123, and citation counts exceeding 56,000.
Wang’s awards include the Distinguished University Professor title (2025), Fellow of the Electrochemical Society (2023), and the Battery Division Research Award (2021). He teaches courses on electrochemical energy engineering and advanced fuel cells. His lab advises the Chem-E Car team and collaborates with institutions like the Army Research Laboratory (ARL) and NASA. Notable projects include developing fluorinated electrolytes for stable electrodes and high-energy aqueous batteries.
His research spans innovations in solid-state batteries, interphase engineering, and electrolyte design for extreme conditions. He leads the CREB, fostering interdisciplinary efforts in battery science and technology.
