Dr. Chunfeng (Sheryl) Tan, MD, PhD is an Assistant Professor at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth Houston), where she leads the BRAINS Research Laboratory. She brings extensive experience from her previous position as a faculty member at Niigata University in Japan, where she conducted significant research in neuropathology.
Dr. Tan's research interests span a wide range of neurological and psychiatric disorders. Her work focuses on the neuropathology of conditions including ALS, Alzheimer's Disease, Frontotemporal Dementia, and stroke, as well as psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia, depression, and drug addiction. She employs both cellular and molecular neuroscience approaches to understand the underlying mechanisms of these disorders.
With expertise in human and animal anatomy, microscopic investigation, and histopathology, Dr. Tan has made significant contributions to brain banking initiatives and has taught specialized techniques for human brain harvesting. Her research bridges basic science with clinical applications, aiming to advance our understanding of brain disorders and develop potential therapeutic approaches.
Dr. Tan earned her MD from North China University of Science and Technology in China and her PhD in Neuropathology from Niigata University Brain Research Institute in Japan, where she also completed her postdoctoral training before moving to the United States.
