Christopher Zimmerman is an Instructor of Philosophy at James Madison University (JMU), having joined in 2023. He holds a Ph.D. (ABD) in Philosophy, Art, and Critical Thought from The European Graduate School, an M.A. in Philosophy and Cultural Analysis from Universiteit van Amsterdam, and a B.A. in Philosophy from Lawrence University.
Research: Zimmerman specializes in critical theory and ideology critique, engaging with German Idealism, Marxism, Psychoanalysis, the Frankfurt School, 20th-century French philosophy, and the Ljubljana School of Psychoanalysis. His current Ph.D. dissertation, supervised by Alenka Zupancic, examines the problem of authority. His work also explores aesthetic, phenomenological, and political dimensions of art.
Teaching: Zimmerman teaches Ethical Reasoning at JMU and has previously instructed courses on Ancient Greek philosophy, early modern philosophy, Nietzsche, Existentialism, cultural theory, and film studies across Shenandoah Valley institutions.
