Mladen Dolar is a Professor of Philosophy at The European Graduate School / EGS and holds the position of Senior Research Fellow at the Department of Philosophy, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia. He has held visiting roles at institutions including the University of Chicago and the Jan Van Eyck Academie. His academic journey includes a diploma from the University of Ljubljana (1978), studies at Université de Paris VIII and University of Westminster, and a PhD from the University of Ljubljana (1992) with a thesis on Hegel’s Phenomenology of Spirit.
Research interests span German classical philosophy, psychoanalysis, structuralism, and cultural studies. Co-founder of the Ljubljana School of Psychoanalysis (with Slavoj Žižek and Rastko Močnik), he merges Hegelian idealism, Marxism, and Lacanian theory. He co-founded the Society for Theoretical Psychoanalysis and chairs editorial boards for Problemi and the Analecta series.
Key publications include Opera’s Second Death (with Žižek) and A Voice and Nothing More, exploring Lacanian object a and psychoanalytic metaphysics. Recent works address naming, childhood, and film theory. His interdisciplinary approach bridges philosophy with cultural and cinematic analysis.
