Professor Christopher Winearls is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Oxford and an Emeritus Fellow of Jesus College. He holds a MBChB from the University of Cape Town and a D.Phil. in Transplant Immunology from the University of Oxford (Nuffield Department of Surgery). His career includes roles as a Consultant Nephrologist at the Oxford Kidney Unit and Clinical Director of the Oxford University Covid-19 Early Alert Service (2021). He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (FRCP) and a Rhodes Scholar.
His research focuses on Polycystic Kidney Disease, Myeloma complications, Chronic Kidney Disease epidemiology, and iron metabolism in haemodialysis. He has contributed to teaching in nephrology, myeloma kidney, and anaemia of renal disease. Professional roles include membership of the Medical Defence Union Council, Expert Witness in nephrology, and Trustee of the Oxford Kidney Unit Trust Fund.
He retired from clinical practice in 2019 but remains active in academia and clinical governance. Personal interests include gardening, dinghy sailing, and amateur history.
