Christopher Hill is a Professor in Modern Japanese Studies and Comparative Literature at the University of Michigan's Center for Japanese Studies and Department of Comparative Literature. He holds a PhD from Columbia University (1999) and teaches modern Japanese literature and cultural history from the 1870s to the present, emphasizing transnational intellectual exchange.
His research explores global intellectual connections, including nationalist thought in 19th-century Japan, France, and the U.S. His book National History and the World of Nations (2008) analyzes how national histories naturalized capitalism and state systems. Current projects include Facing South, examining Japanese writers' engagement with decolonization movements in the 1950s-70s.
Publications span comparative literature, global intellectual history, and Cold War cultural studies. Recent work focuses on Japanese writers' solidarity with the Global South, including studies of Endô Shūsaku and the Afro-Asian Writers Association. His research bridges local cultural phenomena with world-scale structures of power and capital.
