Yu Sakai is Assistant Professor of Modern East Asian History at the University of Cambridge and Fellow of Murray Edwards College. His research employs transnational approaches to examine cultural and intellectual history.
Current scholarship focuses on non-state actors in modern Japan and East Asia, particularly writer Kunikida Doppo's influence on political consciousness. Published works analyze media during the Russo-Japanese War and Japan's 'cultural turn'.
Teaching includes modern Japanese history and world history courses. Research explores conceptions of nature, translation practices, and Global South intellectual networks.
