Dr. Christine Rauer is a Senior Lecturer in the School of English and Institute of Medieval Studies at the University of St Andrews, where she has been a faculty member since 2002. She teaches a range of courses including EN2003 Medieval and Renaissance Texts, EN3111 Beowulf, EN4311 Old English Poetry, and various advanced modules on Old English language and literature. Rauer is an active researcher with 45 research outputs spanning books, articles, chapters, and scholarly editions.
Her research focuses on Old English language and literature, Insular Latin literature, and the literary history of Anglo-Saxon England with particular attention to non-English influences from Continental, Celtic, and Scandinavian sources. She has developed significant expertise in hagiography, Beowulf studies, martyrologies, and the history of the English language. Rauer is currently writing a literary history of Mercia for Brepols and co-organizes the Mercian Network with Professor Jo Story from the University of Leicester.
Rauer's publication record demonstrates consistent scholarly output across multiple disciplines within medieval studies. Her recent work shows a strong focus on linguistic analysis of Old English texts, gender studies within early medieval literature, and the cultural connections between Anglo-Saxon England and other European traditions. She has made significant contributions to database development through her work on the Fontes Anglo-Saxonici project, which catalogs written sources used by Anglo-Saxon authors.
Rauer has successfully secured research funding from The British Academy for projects including 'A Literary History of Mercia: Scribes, Stories, Scholarship' (2022-2023) and 'New critical edition of the Old English Martyrology' (2007-2008). She has supervised multiple doctoral students whose research has been supported by prestigious awards including the George Buchanan Scholarship, Ewan and Christine Brown Postgraduate Scholarship, SGSAH AHRC Doctoral Training Partnership Studentship, and Fulbright Scholarship.
As an active member of the academic community, Rauer regularly serves as an external examiner for PhD vivas and participates in scholarly activities including presentations, multilingual poetry readings, and public lectures. She maintains several academic websites including 'The Nosebag' teaching resource, the Old English Martyrology bibliography, and the Old English Core Vocabulary database.
