Christina M. Termini
Assistant Professor · Hematopoietic Stem Cell Biology
Fred Hutchinson Cancer CenterAbout
Christina M. Termini is an Assistant Professor in both the Translational Science and Therapeutics Division and the Human Biology Division at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center. She leads the Termini Lab, which focuses on understanding the basic processes coordinating hematopoietic stem cell function during homeostasis, stress, and disease. Her research integrates cell biology, regenerative medicine, and cancer biology using advanced microscopy, flow cytometry, and transgenic mouse models.
Dr. Termini's educational background includes:
- PhD in Biomedical Sciences (with Certificate in University Science Teaching) from University of New Mexico (2016)
- MM in Music Performance from University of New Mexico (2015)
- BA/BS in Music and Biological Sciences from University of Maryland (2011)
Her research focuses on how blood stem cells are regulated and how these processes are hijacked during stress and disease. Specifically, she investigates how proteins and glycans synergize to regulate hematopoietic cell fate during homeostasis and in response to stressors like radiation and chemotherapy. Her lab employs transgenic mouse models, in vivo stem cell transplantation assays, patient-derived xenografts, confocal microscopy, super-resolution microscopy, and RNA sequence analysis.
Analysis of her 15 most recent publications reveals a consistent focus on hematopoietic stem cell biology, particularly the role of proteoglycans and glycobiology in stem cell regulation. Her work spans from fundamental molecular mechanisms to clinical applications, with increasing attention to laboratory management, mentorship, and diversity, equity, and inclusion in science.
Dr. Termini is deeply committed to mentoring and scientific training:
- Affiliated with University of Washington Molecular & Cellular Biology and Molecular Medicine and Mechanisms of Disease (M3D) Graduate Programs
- Faculty mentor for Invent at Seattle Children's Postdoctoral Scholars Program
- Associated with University of Washington Post-Baccalaureate Research Education Program (PREP)
- Mentor for Fred Hutch Postbaccalaureate Scholar Program and Damon Runyon SPARK Program
Her laboratory is supported by funding from NIDDK, NCI, AHA, and V Foundation. The Termini Lab maintains affiliations with multiple scientific communities including the University of Washington Institute for Stem Cell & Regenerative Medicine, Fred Hutch/University of Washington/Seattle Children's Hospital Cancer Consortium, and the Fred Hutch Immunotherapy Integrated Research Center.
