Christian Kempgens

Prof. Dr. Christian Kempgens serves as Professor of Contact Optics in the Department of Optics and Optometry at Berlin University of Technology (BHT) since 2016, where he also leads the Laboratory for Visual Aids and oversees practical phase coordination for the Optometry program. His dual expertise bridges academic research and clinical industry applications through responsibilities spanning facility management at Kurfürstenstraße building.

Educational foundation includes:

• 1992: Abitur, Gymnasium Bersenbrück
• 1993-1996: Optician Apprenticeship, Osnabrück
• 1996-1997: Mechanical Engineering studies (3 semesters), TU Braunschweig
• 1998-2002: Optometry Degree, FH Aalen with Diploma Thesis at Pacific University, Oregon
• 2005-2008: PhD Scholarship, Department of Vision Sciences, Glasgow Caledonian University

Research focuses on advanced contact lens systems and visual aid innovation, integrating mechanical engineering principles with clinical optometry. His work emphasizes practical solutions for vision correction through laboratory development of optical instruments and corrective technologies, particularly targeting real-world patient applications in ophthalmic device engineering.

Prior industry experience includes 2002-2005 at Kontaktlinsen-Institut Hubben&Wild (Bremen) followed by dual academic roles as Lecturer at FH Lübeck (2008-2015) and Fielmann Akademie (2008-2016), where he directed the Full-Time Master Course from 2014-2016.

He currently directs BHT's Laboratory for Visual Aids as the central research hub for optical aid prototyping and performance testing, maintaining strong industry partnerships for technology transfer into clinical practice.
