About
Dr Chris Mclean is a Principal Teaching Fellow within the School of Health Sciences at the University of Southampton. He serves as Programme Lead for the Master of Nursing (pre-registration) programme, a four-year integrated Masters course leading to dual-field nursing registration. His academic leadership extends to mentoring colleagues and students in pre-registration nursing programmes.
Chris contributes to nursing education with expertise in decision making, healthcare culture, ethnographic methods, ethics, values-based healthcare, and acute/critical care. He has led curriculum design initiatives since joining the university in 2002, focusing on simulated practice for acute care skill development.
His research centers on critical care nursing, particularly delirium prevention and management in intensive care units. Recent publications highlight co-designed interventions, reliability testing of clinical interaction tools, and cross-cultural studies on healthcare information disclosure. His work combines ethnographic approaches with evidence-based nonpharmacological strategies.
Teaching interests include acute care protocols, ethical patient interactions, and simulation-based education. He currently supervises PhD student Sarah Jane Tippett in Health Sciences.
