About
Chris Knight is a Senior Lecturer in Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Manchester, part of the Faculty of Science and Engineering. His research focuses on evolutionary mechanisms, microbiome dynamics, mutation rate plasticity, and antimicrobial resistance. He leads a lab employing computational and experimental approaches, collaborating with biologists, computer scientists, and theoreticians.
Education includes a PhD in Genetics/Evolution from Imperial College London (2001) and a MA in Natural Sciences from Cambridge (1996). He held a Wellcome Trust Research Career Development Fellowship (2008–2013) and has been active in postdoc training programs.
Key research areas include soil microbiome responses to climate extremes, DAMP (density-associated mutation plasticity), and the evolutionary drivers of antibiotic resistance. Collaborations span institutions like the University of Oxford and Manchester Interdisciplinary Biocentre.
Notable publications include studies on soil microbiome predictability (Nature, 2024) and mutation rate control via peroxide detoxification (PLoS Biology, 2024). He advises on BBSRC/NERC doctoral programs and oversees lab opportunities for PhD and postdoc researchers.
