About
Charlotte Van Riet is a PhD Researcher at Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), affiliated with the Social History of Capitalism department under the History, Archaeology, Arts, Philosophy and Ethics faculty. Her doctoral research, supervised by Bart Lambert (VUB, History), Christophe Snoeck (VUB, Bio-Archaeology), and Bram Vannieuwenhuyze (VU, Cartography), focuses on medieval Ypres' earliest urban dwellers. She investigates socio-economic backgrounds and origins of these populations using isotopic analysis of skeletal remains, historical records, and cartographic evidence. Charlotte is part of the SHOC (Social History of Capitalism) and AMGC (Archaeology, Environmental Changes & Geo-Chemistry) research groups.
Education: MA in History & Archaeology (2021) and MA in History (2023), both from VUB. Her MA thesis (2023) explored the Sint-Niklaas parish in Late-Medieval Ypres through interdisciplinary methods.
Research emphasizes urban development, medieval socio-economic structures, and interdisciplinary methodologies combining bio-archaeology with historical analysis. Current project: FWOTM1259 (2024-2028) examines urban environments in Ypres through historical, archaeological, and cartographic lenses.
- Scientific Awards: FWO-fellowship
Collaborations include cross-disciplinary work with bio-archaeologists and cartographers. Future work focuses on integrating isotopic data with historical sources to reconstruct medieval migration patterns and urbanization processes.
