Charles Springer is a Professor at the Advanced Imaging Research Center (AIRC) of Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU). With over 35 years of experience in in vivo MR research and 50 years in MRI science, he has held leadership roles as founding Director of OHSU’s AIRC and Brookhaven National Laboratory’s High-Field MRI Laboratory. He maintained Visiting Professorships at CalTech and Harvard. His research focuses on advancing MRI technology and applications in biomedical imaging.
Educations and Previous Roles:
- 35-year tenure at Stony Brook University Chemistry Department, including 10 years also on Brookhaven National Lab’s faculty.
- Founding Director of Brookhaven’s High-Field MRI Laboratory.
Research Interests: Pioneering advancements in magnetic resonance imaging science, particularly in vivo applications. His work bridges clinical and experimental MRI, with contributions to methodological innovations and interdisciplinary collaborations.

Grants and Funding: Secured continuous NIH RO1 grants for 30 years, including one 27-year grant and another 13-year grant. Also received NSF (1976–1992) and DOE (1994–2002) support.
Labs and Affiliations: Leads research at OHSU’s AIRC and the W M Keck Foundation High-Field MRI Laboratory. Active in editorial roles for NMR in Biomedicine and conference leadership, including chairing the In Vivo Magnetic Resonance Gordon Research Conference.
