James Pipe

James Pipe is a Visiting Professor and Director of High Value MRI in the Department of Radiology at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, with affiliate appointments in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the Medical Physics program. He is a biomedical and electrical engineer by training, specializing in the development of clinical MRI technologies.

His research focuses on signal processing and image reconstruction in MRI, with an emphasis on improving patient care through technological innovation. He is best known for inventing PROPELLER MRI, a motion correction technique now used in millions of clinical scans annually worldwide. His work extends to next-generation methods such as Spiral MRI, aiming to increase scanning efficiency and accessibility. He advocates for integrating use design with technology development to enhance the overall value of MRI in healthcare.

Dr. Pipe has held significant leadership roles in the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM), including serving as its Past President and Fellow, chairing the 2012 annual meeting, and organizing multiple international workshops on data sampling, image reconstruction, and High Value MRI in collaboration with the Radiological Society of North America.
