About
Charles Chi-Fong Kwan is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Waterloo. His research focuses on physical metallurgy, mechanical metallurgy, materials characterization, fatigue and failure of materials, and deformation mechanisms. He earned a PhD in Materials Science and Engineering (2011) and a Bachelor of Applied Science (2005) from the University of Toronto.
Kwan specializes in advanced materials processing techniques such as accumulative roll bonding, electro-spark deposition, and selective laser melting. His work explores how microstructural engineering influences mechanical behavior in metals like nickel, aluminum, and copper under cyclic loading and deformation. He has developed patents for additive manufacturing methods incorporating ultrasonic excitation and temperature control.
His teaching portfolio includes courses on materials properties, manufacturing processes, and advanced metallurgy topics. He has published extensively on microstructural evolution, grain refinement, and fatigue phenomena, with a focus on experimental and computational metallurgy.
