Chao Sun is a Professor in the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at Stanford University, with a courtesy appointment in the Department of Linguistics. He has served as the Coordinator of the Chinese Program since 1991 and is affiliated with the Center for East Asian Studies.

His research focuses on Chinese linguistics, examining how linguistic forms and meanings vary across socio-cultural contexts. He investigates historical morphosyntactic changes in Chinese and develops pedagogical frameworks for teaching Chinese as a second language.
Recent publications analyze grammaticalization processes in Chinese constructions, including DE 的 markers, BA specialization, and aspectual systems. His work combines theoretical linguistics with historical and pedagogical applications.
As an advisor, he has guided doctoral research with Ryo Nomura. He teaches courses such as Beginning Classical Chinese, Chinese Syntax, and Modern Chinese Structure.
